Maurice Whelan

Managing Director & Owner

I became Managing Director, and co-owner, of Ireland Walk Hike Bike in 2013 and found the perfect role to match my passion for adventure with my love of hospitality and ensuring every guest feels supported and has a memorable experience in Ireland. When I am not in the office or out guiding you will most likely find me surfing or with hiking my dog Jade.

Francis Hartnett

Director & Owner

I have over 15 years experience in activity tourism, having worked in the golf trade before joining Ireland Walk Hike Bike in 2016, becoming co-owner in 2021.

I am passionate about the outdoors, with a big love for walking – as well as Rugby, Football and golf. My favourite part of Ireland has to be the Northern Coast, stunning coastal routes, ancient castles and, of course, the Giants Causeway!

I take pride in knowing that my team and I are making a tangible impact on people’s lives, whether it’s helping a client find the perfect proposal spot along a trail, resolving a travel issue, or simply providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests.We are firm believers in “it may not be our fault, but it is our problem”, and our clients happiness is our main priority. We get to work with a diverse group of individuals from all walks of life, each with their own unique stories and personalities – There is nothing quite like watching customers leave with big smiles on their faces because they had an exceptional adventure. It’s these moments that make all the hard work worth it and remind me why I love what I do– it’s not just about doing a job; it’s about making a difference in people’s lives and the memories that stay with them forever.

I have been involved in the travel industry for over 12 years. Starting off by studying a International Travel and Tourism degree learning the in and out of the industry. I then undertook 1 year trip around the world visiting over 30 countries across 6 continents. Since then I have spent the last 8 years continuing to travel to different countries as well as working in different roles within the industry expanding my knowledge and passing this information on to others.

I have been hiking and climbing for over 35 years all over the world, I have an expert knowledge of the Irish mountains, rivers and lakes. As an outdoor specialist I have also worked for some of the world’s best outdoor brands such as Eagle Creek, Lowe Alpine and MSR.

Nenad Basic

I graduated from the Faculty of Geography, Tourism and Hotel Management and have been working in the hospitality industry for more than 15 years. After working for a short time in my native Serbia, I went abroad to see
the world. I spent part of my career on cruise ships traveling in the
Caribbean, Alaska and Australia. I have been in Ireland since 2018 and after
several hotels I started working in Ireland Walk Hike Bike. I like to travel
and take photos and it is my dream to visit distant countries.

My passion for travel has taken me to three out of seven continents, and I’m eagerly planning to tick off more destinations from my travel bucket list.

My favorite place in Ireland is the Beara Way, especially the stunning Garnish Island in South Cork on a sunny day. I find great joy in sharing the beauty of Ireland with our clients and guiding them through their adventures across the Emerald Isle. Whether it’s recommending hidden gems or helping plan the perfect itinerary with our sales team, I love ensuring each traveller’s experience is unforgettable.

Ireland Walk Hike Bike is a dream come true for me – from the early beginnings in my head in the very late 1980’s through to now as a wonderful business managed by Maurice Whelan. My dream was to find a way to bring people to the unknown parts of Ireland and immerse you into the “real” Ireland – full of nature, fresh air, amazing landscapes & scenery, history, stories and characters. 25 years later, that dream is now a reality and I continue to look for new walks & new ways to introduce you to those “hidden treasures” in Ireland that I adore.
