With “summer” upon us, it is time for the annual announcement of Ireland’s Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards. In all 85 beaches achieved the Blue Flag award this year, with 56 earning National Green Coast Awards.
There are numerous criteria to be met for a beach to achieve the Blue Flag status; water quality levels, information provision, environmental education, beach management & EU bathing water directives. Whereas the Green Coast Awards which are generally aimed at more rural beaches which may not be designated bathing places with facilities such as toilets. They recognise beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality and natural beauty.
Kerry & Donegal have topped the list for the number of Blue Flag beaches, both with 13, with Mayo in 3rd, with 11.
Everyone will have their own opinion on what are Ireland’s Best Beaches, there are so many to choose from all over the country, each one different to the next.
